FOCS Laboratory at Graduate School of State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA) was established in 1990-1992 by the support the Armenian Professional Society of America, Los-Angeles, California. With the help of above-mentioned Society FOCS Lab has been equipped by Fiber Optics Kit to carry out 10 teaching projects. They are as follows: light transmission through different optical fibers, measuring optical parameters of fibers, transmission and receiving analog signals across the fiber, fiber connection methods , etc (Fiber Optics Kit from Newport Optics Company).
The Laboratory is equipped with 3 PC-IBM computers, which are connected to the local network of SEUA.
The Laboratory is unique in Armenia, where graduate and postgraduate students are taught in the speciality of "Engineering of Communication Means".
Besides teaching graduate and postgraduate students the Laboratory took part in European Investigation Programme COST-240 "Modeling and Measuring Advanced Photonic Telecommunication Components" in the period from 1994 to 1998. At that time the Programme Chairman was Prof. G.Guekos from Institute for Quantum Electronics, ETH Zurich, CH-8093, Zurich, Switzerland.
An advanced method of investigation of peculiarities of electromagnetic wave self-action in nonlinear and modulated media has been developed and presented in the final book of COST-240 actions "Photonic Devices for Telecommunications" (How to Model and Measure)/ Editor G.Guekos, Springer-Verlag, 1999, 404p (H.V. Baghdasaryan, Method of backward calculation, pp.56-65), which was the result of active participation in the frame of this Programme. This is a new non-traditional method to solve the nonlinear boundary problems of electrodynamics and at the present the Laboratory continues the investigations to implement it to the appropriate problems of fiber optics communication.
In 1996-1997 the Laboratory was involved in Swiss State Project "Communication System with Optical Fibers and Nonlinear Photonic Components". The Project was supervised by Prof. G.Guekos and coordinated by Prof. N.Uzunoglu from National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Owing to this Programme a new type of stand was set up at the Laboratory for demonstrating the system of digital communication via fiber optics line. An educational and design computer interactive programme "Fiber Optics Communication System Modelling". This interactive programming complex is able to modulate the system of digital communication consisting of the following main blocks:
The Programme permits to investigate all the stages of passing the digital signals from transmitter up to receiver and observe the quality of signals according to the parameters of all three blocks.
Since 1998 the Laboratory has been carrying out the investigation on the State Budget Project: "Computer Modelling of Fiber Optics Filter-Amplifier.
The results of the works of the Laboratory have been presented at different International Conferences (see List of Publicatiobs in CVs).
