KHACHKAR

“Khachkar” – this word is typical Armenian word (“cross” and “stone”).

There are very few nations that have branch of t\national culture, that has been their property for thousands of years. For over 1200 years Armenians have amazed the world by their Khachkars.

During its development Khachkar art had three periods: 8th-9th cc, 9th-10th cc, 11th-12th cc, and reached its peak in 13th-14th cc.

This masterpiece consists of three parts – basic definition, slab and inclined kiv. The slab is rectangle, entirely covered, in the centre the cross. There is no Khachkar that is alike to the other one, all Khachkars are entirely different. There are over 10 000 Khachkars.

Khachkars are all around Armenia and they were put for every occasion except birth. Khachkars differ in their sizes from 50sm height to 6-8m, 30sm-1.5m length. 20-30sm thickness.

In Khachkar art Poghos master’s creations are the peak. Fortunately the best of them reaches us. They are in Goshavank, Deghdznut and Dadivank. Poghos’s Khachkars are called “embroidered”.

On Poghos’s Khachkars three embroiders rising on each other so gently that it seems there is a transparent cover on it. None of the poets can describe this art, it can be only seen.
